Translation Notes -- Kanmuri
Part 1 -- Prologue
あーん あーん
Not sure if we actually want to translate that part, but I did as "Ahhh..."
Part 2 -- Labyrinth mansion
不幸 (Fuko)
I think this has been translated in other episodes as misfortune. The kanji literally mean the opposite of happiness, which would be sorrow. Just wanted to bring that up.
Part 3 -- Kaoru's donuts truck
No notes for now.
Part 4 -- Labyrinth again
不幸のネタ
ネタ is "material; joke material; contents; proof" so I went with "inspiration" as in he's looking for circumstances to replicate to cause people to suffer so he can fill the fuko gage.
Part 5 -- Back at the park
ペットくん… 2世!
I've translated it as Pet-kun Mark II. Not sure what to do other than just leave the -kun on there. ^^;
いいから
Not a literal translation, but she's trying to shush the kid, and いいから is kinda hard to translate. ^^;
いいから いいから
Hard to translate, really. Did my best stab at it given the context.
みんなが不幸になる
Yeah, I have several different translations of "fuko" here, mostly since only certain ones fit in certain contexts, or at least fit better than others.
ナケワメーケ われにつかえよ!
I'm trying to remember what we decided on about this.... since what we have isn't really what he's saying.
He's actually saying, literally, "Serve me, Nakewameke!"
Update: After speaking with pcj in IRC, we decided to change this to a more accurate translation. Based on the text in the actual Japanese script for this episode, we have a new, better translation.
ナケワメーケ われにつかえよ! Literally means "Nakewameke, serve me!" To fit the timing better, the translation is "Nakewameke, do my bidding!"
フサフサ
Dictionary lists it as "tufty" or in tufts. But another entry also lists abundant or flowing hair. This latter definition fits with the context much better, considering the speaker just had his hair turned from short trimmed to mid-back length.
Part 6 -- Wig rampage
生まれる
Love's dad uses 生まれる, which means to be born, when referring to the creation of the wig. I kept it like that because it seemed to fit with his earlier talk of hearing the wig's voice, etc., though it could possibly be translated as "created" instead, in this context.
元のすがたに もどってくれ!
While it could be a plea to have Wester return the wig to normal, the next line by Wester, saying that his words couldn't reach the wig now, suggests it was actually talking directly to the wig.
"To return it to normal, we have no choice but to..."
"Fight it after all!"
Okay, here's the issue with this sentence, it's split between Pine and Berry. Because of the sentence structure difference between English and Japanese, part of what each girl says actually belongs in the other's dialog in the English version... The "after all" is actually what Pine says, and "we have no choice but to..." is in Berry's. This was the best way I could figure of making sense of this. XD
"Please leave it up...
"To us!"
Okay, another split sentence, same issue. Pine says the first part, Berry the second. Problem is that in English, they're completely reversed. So did that in the script. Pine actually says the "to us" part, while Berry says, "Leave it up to..."
Part 7 -- Aftermath
いざって時に たよりになる人って
いざる(izaru) is "to crawl; to shuffle along", so I think it was talking about when they were knocked to the ground and their dads blocked the nakewameke's attack. That's why I translated it the way I did.
不幸だぁ~~~!
I decided to translate "fuko da" that as "this sucks!" instead of a more literal translation, because it sounded more natural in English and better communicated the connotation behind the words than, "I'm miserable!" or something like that.
