DokiDoki! Precure episode 5
Yeah, we’re way late this week. Combination of the editor having a week from hell and a massive amount of typesetting to do. So far it looks like we’ll be back on track for episode 6 though (we’ve been working on it in parallel with this one).
To explain the pic… It turns out Makopi really can sing… we hear it later in the episode. But in the line pictured above, right at the beginning of the episode, she’s shouting along-side the music and not singing. It’s the desired effect in the arrangement for that song [K.o.R: Why they think this is a good idea is beyond me.], but when it’s the only thing you hear (which it is, the first time we hear it) it sounds like she’s tone-deaf and can’t sing. Later on we hear a larger portion of the song, and that line is the only part she shouts, and the rest of it sounds great!
[K.o.R: I say she’s miming the rest of the song. It’s the only logical explanation.]

I came here to see how you translated ‘makoto-san e no utagai wa nokotta mama’, but I couldn’t resist posting this:

No, she didn’t! Re-watch the scene carefully as I did and you’ll see the bag has actually been there all along (she’s holding it with her left hand). Toei is one step ahead of us this time!
And since I’m writing this anyway, I’ll note that I’m fairly sure ‘chichi’ is exactly what you use to refer to your own father in the most polite sort of speech (when not speaking to the said father).

Okay, lemme comment on ちち。 Most formal would be お父様。 We chose to use “Daddy” there for multiple reasons, one, it has the air of her being a “Daddy’s girl” Two, it can also have the feeling of “Yes ‘Daddy’ you will do what I tell you to do, but I’m not going to outright tell you to do it, I’ll just manipulate you that direction because I have you wrapped around my little finger, desuwa～” Three, in this instance she does seem to be using it informally and “Daddy” is a decent translation.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I didn’t actually mind ‘Daddy’ but disagreed with the reasoning given in the script comment (‘because she used 父(ちち) by itself, and not something more formal’). And your second example is hilarious!

Yeah, sometimes the comments are left over from the TL pass and possibly even got changed during TLC and Edit to something completely different. In fact, “Daddy” was my suggestion during editing lol.

Rich kids always call their parents “Mummy” and “Daddy”. It’s… a thing.
